Patrick Kemp's Internship Spotlight

October 31, 2022 Bryce Holt

This summer, Patrick Kemp had the opportunity to work at a golf course focusing primarily on landscape management. Kemp's job consisted of essential duties throughout the course including mowing the greens and raking the bunkers. He worked at a golf course located in Shelbyville, Delaware which is one of the top golf courses in Delaware, so he was blessed to get this opportunity to intern here for his major in Agricultural Business Management.

Kemp learned the primary duties of keeping a golf course in check. He also, learned how the irrigation systems work, how the fairways and greens are managed, and most importantly he learned about teamwork and how to work with people around him to achieve a goal that they all are working towards which is keeping the course in check. After he reviewed his internship, one thing that no one else did other than him was mowing greens. His boss and the other workers trusted him enough and liked him enough to work with the equipment and he would usually mow greens twice a week. Kemp said his most significant accomplishment had to of been the sodding work that he did. He thinks this was his most significant accomplishment because he was forced to step out of his comfort zone and get his hands a little dirty, this also showed Kemp how much his group was capable of doing.

There are some new skills that he adapted by working at the golf course, he now is able to understand the golf course in a different light. He understands the irrigation system and how it’s run as well as spotting diseases on the course and noticing when it is in good condition and when it’s not. He also is much better with his hands and is able to do most landscaping jobs. The only downside about the job was that Kemp had to wake up at 5 am almost every day. In order to succeed in this field, you need to be passionate about doing it, you have to be willing to wake up at 5 am and get out on the course. It’s not easy, but you have to be willing to put in the work and time of day to succeed in an industry like this one.
