Mark Shekletski Internship Spotlight

November 11, 2021 Mark Shekletski Jr.

As a Landscape Management student from Ijamsville, MD, I interned with Ruppert Landscape, a Commercial Landscape and Construction Company in Laytonsville, MD.  This internship afforded me the opportunity to complete a variety of tasks and jobs. I worked on maintenance and enhancement crews, helped Irrigation crews and assisted the area manager throughout the summer.

My favorite project was the nature bench pad that I installed in Rockville, MD. This was done on an enhancement crew and took us two days to complete.  Another project I enjoyed was the Zenimaxx install in Gaithersburg, MD  where we planted a wide variety of plants and shrubs.

My father has spent his career in landscaping and it was fun to meet and worked with a few people who had worked with my dad when he was an intern at Brickman in the 1980s.

Over the summer I learned to write proposals and estimate properties for possible future client bids. I gained professional communication skills in talking to people in a business setting and by learning to navigate a professional office. Being my first time in a corporate setting pushed me out of my comfort zone, but improving my communication skills was a big plus.

My career goal is to one day help my father run his Landscape Company, Greenlink Incorporated. This internship with Ruppert allowed me to learn many different aspects of a Landscape company. I learned everything from new field jobs that I have never done before all the way up to the bidding and estimating process. It was helpful to see how a very successful company runs its business.
