Makayla Kret Internship Spotlight

November 4, 2021 Grayson Welsh

Makayla Kret, a blossoming second-year student at the Institute of Applied Agriculture, is originally from La Plata, Maryland and is majoring in Agricultural Business Management. For her summer internship, she worked at the Humane Society of Charles County where she could care for rescue animals.

Kret has her own pets at home, but her summer experience allowed her to care for ferrets and other interesting species. Kret considered this the most interesting aspect of her job. She discovered that not all pet care is the same and each pet/animal is different. Kret recalls the day she almost lost a rabbit, “It [the rabbit] was there and then suddenly it wasn’t! Luckily it wasn’t far from where its enclosure was, so I found it shortly after.”

At the Humane Society of Charles County, Kret learned how to clean pet kennels, feed animals, and socialize with cats. She walked dogs, did laundry, and cleaned facilities.

Kret completed her 320 hour internship as a volunteer, so she didn’t have a direct boss, but her employment supervisor, Charidy Hanson was pleases with Kret’s work, saying “Makayla was a very hard worker. Super eager to learn new things.”

Before this internship, Kret had experience caring for horses which attracted her to animal care and this summer gave her more insight and experience in the field. Kret says, “I have always had a deep interest for horses and the general care for animals. I would really like to continue with this as a possible career in the future.”

Her internship at the Humane Society has given her more insight into what goes on behind the scenes at a Humane Society and how to take care of certain animals properly. With this new knowledge gained from her internship experience, she feels more eager than ever to begin a career in this field.
