Internship Spotlight- Anthony Freni

November 4, 2014

Anthony Freni, a second year student at University of Maryland’s Institute of Applied Agriculture (IAA), spent his summer interning at the Brickman Group, a landscaping company that has been expanding nationwide since 1939. Freni spent his days running grass-cutting crews, putting in plant installations, driving company trucks, and maintaining new installations.

A landscape management major at the IAA, Freni believes this internship was perfect for him. Freni worked out of Brickman’s Upper Marlboro office and serviced job sites from Southern Maryland to parts of Washington DC and Northern Virginia.  He says he chose this internship because “Brickman has been a very large and popular commercial landscaping company and I can use the experience in my career.”   Freni plan is to take everything he has learned this summer, combine it with what he has learned at school, and apply it to expanding his family’s company, F&F Landscaping located in Brandywine, MD. This long term goal of company success for F&F Landscaping is what originally stimulated Anthony to attend classes at the IAA. Freni hopes that one day, he can not only improve the company as a whole, but also master the skills necessary in running a business.

The Institute of Applied Agriculture is a 2 year certification program that has majors including: Landscape Management, Golf Course Management, Ornamental Horticulture, Sports Turf Management and Sustainable Agriculture. (http://iaa.umd.edu/)
