IAA Students, Faculty and Alumni work golf tournament

June 27, 2014

For IAA faculty, students and alumni “hands-on learning” is not just a phrase on paper.  It’s our practice. Over two dozen alumni and current students worked or volunteered at the Quicken Loans National golf tournament at Congressional Country Club during the week of June 23-29.

The morning shift arrived by 4 a.m. to accomplish such tasks as mowing, cup changing, hand watering, and measuring putting green speed, soil moisture levels, and putting green firmness or hardness. All of these activities must be completed by the start of play at 8 a.m.

The afternoon shift starts at 4 p.m. and is normally completed by 9 p.m. Fairway mowing, greens rolling, and hand watering are some of the tasks completed in the afternoon.

The tournament provides IAA students with excellent hands-on opportunities for preparing a golf course for a professional golf tournament.  And, it afforded IAA faculty members a chance to practice their field skills.

“A couple of our faculty members have been coming into the office exhausted between shifts at the tournament,” said IAA Director Glori Hyman, “but I’m glad to see them volunteering alongside students and alumni.”
