IAA Internship Spotlight: Jason Wildt

October 2, 2019

When you love what you do it's never really work. Institute of Applied Agriculture student, Jason Wildt he knew he wanted a career in golf course management ever since he was 16 and started working on a golf course.

Over the summer Wildt, a resident of Parkville, MD, interned at Sparrows Point Country Club. In addition to the lessons from his IAA classes, he brought 9 years of experience working on golf courses. During his internship he was given a managing role and was able to pick his staff and jobs. He also was able to teach some of the high school employees.

Over the course of his internship, Wildt had several tasks like mowing greens, tees, fairways, and rough. One of his favorite parts of the job was “being up in the morning and seeing the sun rise.” One day over the summer he found a frog in a valve box that was full of “disgusting water,” recounts Wildt. Even though Wildt didn't want to go anywhere near the valve box water, he knew he couldn't let the little guy stay in there, so he saved him and released him into the creek.
Wildt’s manager Tyler Bloom talked about how he was a hard worker and was always at the top of his game. Bloom also talked about how Wildt was a great addition to his staff and brought a lot of enthusiasm and made work less stressful. Wildt also had the opportunity to spray herbicides for broadleaf weeds and sprayed the fairways with fungicides. He edged bunkers and raked with a sand pro and by hand.

However, Wildt gained new leadership, organization, and administrative work skills. With the skills Wildt gained and his years of experience he wishes to one day open his own country club. Wildt has such a strong passion for working on the golf course and being outside that he truly deserves to one day start his own golf course.
