Fight Terp hunger! The students of INAG248 Topics in Sustainable Agriculture invite you to donate to the UMD Campus Pantry to help supplement food insecure students. The class was inspired to organize the food drive after learning about campus food insecurity during a guest lecture. According to preliminary findings of a UMD Counseling Center study, approximately 1 in 5 UMD students identify as food insecure, meaning that they have a lack of access to sufficient nutritious food and may not know where their next meal is coming from.

Being food insecure affects all aspects of a student’s life, including poorer academic performance, declines in physical health, and impaired mental health. The stress of hunger causes many students to not be able to perform the tasks they normally could, resulting in withdrawing from classes, dropping out of school, stressed family relationships, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and physical ailments. Many students do not have the time or money to fix this situation themselves.

This is where you come in. By donating to the UMD Campus Pantry through our food drive, you would be helping a fellow community member in need. Our class focuses on diverse topics relevant to sustainable agriculture -- more than just growing food, but also about innovating solutions to preserve human health through high quality, nutritious food. Food is one of the most basic necessities of life, and all people deserve food that will make their lives healthier and happier. Even just one item of food could help a student in need get through the day. So please consider donating whatever you can to nourish our campus community.
