The Institute of Applied Agriculture’s annual Turkey Bowl features a flag football game followed by a grand thanksgiving feast before students go on Thanksgiving break! On November 12, 2018, IAA faculty and students gathered at the engineering and softball fields next to the Mitchell Building on the University of Maryland campus for a friendly game of flag football!

The 18 players were divided into two teams, both teams consisting of both first and second year students. At half time, Team 1 dominated with a 14-0 lead. But that was short lived, as Team 2 came back from half time even stronger and won with a score of 21-28! Both students and faculty stood on the sidelines cheering for their friends.

After the game, the hungry group gathered in Jull Hall for Thanksgiving dinner which featured a student-approved menu from Boston Market and Chick-fil-a, including potato salad, mashed potatoes, and lots of gravy.

Second year student Kevin Cooley commented, “I have never seen so many chicken nuggets in one place.  The food was amazing and it was great to de-stress with everyone and have a nice dinner before our break.”

There were pies, cookies, ice cream, and more, as all students were fed to the brim before heading home for break.

The IAA’s annual Turkey Bowl is planned and run as a class project by the students in INAG 240 Professional Development to help students develop leadership and team building stills.   The event began nearly two decades ago as a friendly battle between first- and second-year students, and has evolved into a fun way to celebrate community among IAA faculty, staff and students.
