In the heart of Washington D.C on Pennsylvania Ave, there is always commotion and something happening. This could be a presidential motorcade or a protest for something in Congress. This causes a lot of stress but also gives you many fun events to attend. Along with this, it gives you a whole new perspective on what life is like in a big city. It gives you a look at both the beautiful parts and the bad parts. I am very thankful for having worked in DC and having the opportunity to have a different perspective on what my life is like versus others.
My day started with me grabbing a coffee and going to my desk. My next step was to open and read the news and all the political and various government related events that happened once I left the office the day before. This is a crucial step because you always need to be informed about what's happening, but especially working in DC, after catching up on the news and events from the night before we would usually have a team meeting of sorts. These meetings would entail details for the day, people that we would be meeting and who would be coming into the office, and all the information we would need for the day.
The place where I completed my internship was at a place called The Council. The Council is located on Pennsylvania Ave in DC very closely situated to the Capital. The Council is an insurance and broker firm representing some of the top BPI insurance company earners such as Aflac, State Farm, Allstate, etc… We also represent Congress and senators from their cars to their houses and more. Some of my favorite things and the best things I did during my internship were making connections for full-time jobs with various members of Congress and the Senate for different positions on their teams. Another amazing thing that I did for my internship was that I got to go play golf with various members and just talk to them about who I am, what I do, who they are, what they are passionate about, and why they should allow us to represent them and help them make more money along with having better insurance deals. Something fun and very interesting that happened was seeing the ideas from all the senators in one room together talking about what they are passionate about and seeing how so many of these things change from person to person. One of my bosses Luka states “Luke approached any task he was given with enthusiasm and a willing attitude to learn. Luke was helpful with sourcing articles for our climate newsletter and with updating our issue one sheet on SAFE banking.” Some of my greatest and most amazing accomplishments that I achieved this summer range from getting a full-time job offer with members of Congress to helping draft and write a bill that is in Congress currently, and finally the amount of connections that I made that will not only help me land a job in my future endeavors, but will hopefully help me work harder and be more determined in classes now and in the future. I learned some new skills during my job endeavor this summer, but I think the greatest part was that I developed my speaking and dressing skills more professionally.
In conclusion, this summer was a very busy and enjoyable summer for me. I enjoyed almost every second of it even though there were lots of very stressful points. This summer internship helped shape me into the person I want to be in the future and helped me see a lot of very cool things. This internship taught me a lot of things about our government, things that need to be changed and fixed, and things about myself I would have never seen in myself unless I had this opportunity.
