Heritage Museum and Gardens in historic Sandwich, MA on Cape Cod offers summer internships for the period May through late August. This is a great opportunity to gain botanical garden work experience. Students work directly for and with the Director of Horticulture in the Garden doing various duties as required to maintain a public garden.Using the extensive and mature plant collections, students participate in daily walks and are required to learn approximately 100 woody plants and 50 herbaceous perennials over the 10 week course. In addition, students participate in semi-weekly lectures on various subjects related to botanical garden operation, plant culture and landscape design. Each week, on a rotating schedule students are required to write a “What’s in Bloom” column for the HMG website. Responsibility for writing the column will rotate through the interns so that each intern will have the opportunity at least once.Students will participate in several field trips to other gardens of the northeast including a 4 day trip to visit Longwood Gardens, Chanticleer, The New York Botanical Garden and Central Park as well as a day trip to Arnold Arboretum.Interns are scheduled to work 40 hrs a week at an hourly rate of $10.
