Halloween weekend proved to be a real treat for the IAA’s Speech and Debate Society!

November 7, 2014

On Halloween night, the team’s members won awards for rigorous rhetoric at Morgan State University—and that wasn’t an easy trick to pull off.

Bobby Lindsey and Kevin Chiang, who grabbed first place in persuasive speaking and informative speaking, respectively, performed three times for three different judges before heading to final rounds. Will Shah and Rahul Srinivas made an amazing showing in parliamentary debate, taking on Randolph Macon College in preliminary rounds before advancing to a power-matched final before finishing with a 3rd place award.

Coached by IAA Oral Communication Lecturer, Nina LaTassa, the team has recently grown its squad over the past few weeks, taking on new members and bringing the bigger brood to West Chester University before hitting Morgan’s Halloween tournament. The group plans to next compete in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in January.

Interested in joining the team? Contact team president Rahul Srinivas at rsrinivas@terpmail.umd.edu or the team’s adviser, Nina LaTassa, at nlatassa@umd.edu. Meetings are held every Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. in the IAA conference room on the second floor of Jull Hall.
