Internship Spotlight: Sean Watson

November 4, 2020 Philip Pitta

There is a saying that if you have a job you love, you will never work a day in your life. This saying rings true for Sean Watson, who has passion for working in the golf course management industry.

After six years of working on golf courses, he decided make it his career because of how much he enjoyed his time. After enrolling at the University of Maryland’s Institute of Applied Agriculture as a Golf Course Management major, Watson completed his internship this past summer at Baltimore Country Club in Timonium, Maryland. He really enjoyed his time at the club and feels it will have a great impact on his future success in the industry.

As a key member of the grounds crew at the club, Watson was responsible for various tasks, including closing and opening gates to the course, cutting cups, mowing fairways, and his favorite job--hand mowing the greens. Watson also learned proper hand watering techniques. As Watson’s coworker remarked, “You spend most of your workday preparing for the next.”   Watson had been closing a gate to the course one night when he came face to face with a deer. After being caught in a stare down for a few moments, the deer finally took off, leaving Watson free to shut the gate and end his day at the course.

After seven years of working for golf courses, Watson’s career goal is to work in a private golf course or country club setting, and he feels that his internship at Baltimore Country club has done a good job of setting him up for future success.  He will be returning to Baltimore Country Club as a full time assistant within the next few months.
