Internship Spotlight: Sam Harrison

November 18, 2020 Carlos Villamar

For a staggering six years now, Sam Harrison has worked for Dudrow, Inc. Lawn and Landscape, becoming one of their most valued employees, and now, a valued intern. Harrison, unlike many other young adults, spent his summer working from dusk to dawn and putting in over 320 hours of hard work. He is a remarkable second-year Agricultural Business Management student at the Institute of Applied Agriculture (IAA), located in College Park, Maryland.  He plans to pursue his bachelor's degree once he graduates from the IAA.

Harrison has always enjoyed working for Dudrow Inc. His favorite parts of the job consist of handling a variety of equipment from lawnmowers to trimmers, and even driving trucks. His usual tasks include mowing grass, weeding, mulching,  and doing yard clean-up; but during to his internship, he was able to work on machine maintenance, customer relations, grass-cutting patterns, and schedule management. While working diligently, he gained essential life and business skills in advanced machine maintenance, improved customer relations, and handling job schedules.

In the midst of Harrison’s internship, Roy Walls, one of IAA's professors and advisors, took a trip to Dudrow Inc. to check on Harrison’s work and speak to his boss. After Walls’s visit, he shared that “Sam’s work ethic was a good one as I interacted with his boss.”   Harrison’s boss affirms this claim, adding that “...an early start time and several long days to which Sam was always there.”

Harrison’s internship had a big effect on his career goal, which no longer includes the pursuing the landscaping field.  Although he has learned a lot by working for Dudrow Inc., his goal is to establish a career within an agriculture service company that sells products to aid local farmers. As a fourth-generation grain farmer, he also wants to continue his family farm as a long-term objective.

Harrison is an exceptional student and intern, from the hours he has invested in Dudrow Inc. and the great performance showed while he labored throughout the day, during his summers. After working for long hours, Sam rewards himself by gazing at the mulch he laid on the soil and the grass that has been perfectly cut. He takes pride in his work and likes to say, “Do it right the first time.”

Although his future will not involve landscaping, he is very thankful for the priceless experience Dudrow Inc. was able to provide.
