IAA Internship Stories: Cory Schuch

October 19, 2016

Being only 21 years old and a supervisor on a large-scale farm is a lot of pressure, but Cory Schuch, a second-year Institute of Applied Agriculture student, wasn’t fazed by the pressure.  He welcomed the opportunity to experience the daily operations of Windmill Hill Farm in Churchville, MD, during his internship.

For Schuch, the experience solidified his lifelong goal of owning a large-scale produce enterprise, and deepened his love of farming. Schuch found the internship enlightening and useful because he was able to apply his new skills and knowledge at his family's farm in Middle River, Md.

Schuch, an Agricultural Business Management major, had been employed by Windmill Hill Farm for the four years leading up to his IAA internship, so he knew all the daily operations of the farm. But, he stated, “there is always more to learn.” During the internship, Schuch focused on his leadership, teamwork, and time management skills. He learned to divide and delegate work evenly so the farm could operate more efficiently.

Schuch’s internship deepened his passion for farming and for family. He says, “I love the work I do, and our society depends on farms.” Schuch looks forward to keeping farming in his family’s future for many years to come.
