Colby Dean’s Internship with High Point Hanoverians

Training, grooming, showing horses, and traveling to California were only a small portion of Colby Dean’s intern duties at High Point Hanoverians in Chestertown, MD. Dean, a second-year Agricultural Business Management student at the Institute of Applied Agriculture, also collected semen from stallions for breeding and assisted in selling horses. But the highlight of his internship was a trip to California for a horse show, and riding a stallion in a breeding inspection.

In his search for an internship opportunity, Dean sought a place where he could get an early start in the equine industry. Many factors played into Dean’s decision to work for High Point Hanoverians, but the chance to ride and train horses made the job a perfect fit for him. Although Dean greatly enjoys riding, he admits that there is a lot more to the horse industry. “I learned the difficulties of the horse business, and that it takes a lot of hard work if you want to be successful,” says Dean, whose career goal is to continue training, buying, and selling horses, as well as competing.

Dean’s internship with High Point Hanoverians gave him ample experience in the equine business. The knowledge Dean gained can be applied throughout his career, therefore he has achieved his goal of entering the equine industry. In fact, what began as a summer 2015 internship with High Point Hanoverians has turned into a full-time job. Dean continues to work at High Point while completing his certificate in applied agriculture at the University of Maryland.
