Harmer Hums through Horticulture Internship

December 5, 2013

If you need to know something about a plant but also want to hear a great song, Nick Harmer is the man to go to. He is not only a great musician, but he is on his way to becoming a great horticulturalist.

A second-year student at the Institute of Applied Agriculture studying Ornamental Horticulture, Harmer interned as a Sales Associate at Leon’s Garden World in New Castle, Delaware.

During his internship, Harmer had numerous responsibilities including selling and maintaining plants.  But, he spent so much time watering plants that he comically refers to himself as a “plant moisture specialist.”

Leon’s Garden World has four locations and Harmer worked at each of them at some point during the summer.  He said, “Working at four different locations exposed me to the different styles of management and the different types of people that are out there in the greenhouse industry.”  From retail to maintenance, he learned firsthand how varied the greenhouse industry is and how the different aspects work together.

He chose to complete his internship with Leon’s Garden World because he wanted to experience variety. Nick loves the greenhouse industry and hopes to use the knowledge he gained from his internship to further his own career in horticulture and he is grateful for this hands-on opportunity.

Harmer’s talent and attention to detail helped tremendously in the success of the business while he was there. He went above and beyond on a regular basis. He even helped remodel the owner’s kitchen! Now, that is dedication!
