Areas of Study at the IAA

Grow with us!

Do you love being outdoors? Working with hands-on projects? If so, you may be ready to kick-start your career at the Institute of Applied Agriculture (IAA).

Our two-year certificate program provides high-quality education that opens doors to successful careers in the agribusiness, sustainable agriculture, horticulture, landscaping, turfgrass, and ag communications industries.

At the IAA, you’ll have the best elements of a small institution—hands-on learning, close ties with faculty, and a strong community of students and alumni—along with the many benefits of belonging to a large university.

Pursue one or more concentrations in our three key areas of study:

1. Agricultural Business Management and Leadership

2. Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Management

3. Turfgrass and Golf Course Management

Agriculture Forward at Maryland:

Agriculture Forward at Maryland (Ag Forward) is an accelerated program for first-year college students. Ag Forward students are advised on a curriculum plan that allows them to become degree-seeking after only one year at the IAA. Numerous UMD courses meet both requirements for the Certificate in Applied Agriculture and their desired four-year major. Within four years, the student can become eligible to earn both a certificate from the IAA and a bachelor's degree from one of the programs within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR)Read more.

Continuing Education:

The IAA's Continuing Education option is designed for students who wish to enroll in select courses without completing the entire certificate. These courses hone management skills and prepare industry personnel for certification exams. Read more.
