CASE Institute is a professional development workshop designed to provide secondary education teachers with the training related to a specific CASE course. CASE Institute sessions provide the background related to the instructional strategies used in CASE curricula and practice in teaching various lessons. Principles of Agricultural Science - Plants is one of the two foundation level courses that CASE currently has available, ASP allows students to explore the form and function of plants and the value that plants have in our society. As with all CASE courses, lessons are designed to challenge student thinking at a high level. Students are imersed into laboratory exercises as the mode of teaching rather than lecture. CASE courses are structured to provide students with clear learning objectives that follow logical progressions of thinking about plant systems. Registration Registration is due on June 18, 2012. To register go to Case Institute Registration. Registration fee is $2500.00. Lodging is for double occupancy (shared with another CASE participant) and covers the entire workshop period: the evening of Monday, July 16 through the evening of Thursday, July 25. Single rooms are available at an additional cost of $500.00. Meals are included for class days. Purchase orders can be addressed to: Carol Allen Class Location The institute sessions will be held on the University of Maryland, College Park campus. A Campus map will be provided. All buildings are air conditioned. College Park, Maryland, located 9 miles outside of downtown Washington, DC, sits inside the capital beltway (Rt 495/95) and is bisected by U.S. Rt 1. One of the many dynamic suburbs of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area, College Park is about 30 miles south of Baltimore and 35 miles from Annapolis, the Maryland state capital. Schedule Participants are to arrive by 4 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2012. A welcome reception and dinner will be held that evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. Class begins Tuesday, July 17 at 8 a.m. Classes will meet Tuesday through Saturday the first week and Monday through Thursday the second week. All classes run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an hour lunch break. Lunch will be catered and brought to the building. The workshop concludes at 5 p.m. on Thursday, July, 26. Participants are advised that hotel checkout is 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26. Lodging Participants will stay in a local College Park Hotel. The hotel provides breakfast and free shuttle service to and from class. Meals Meals are included in the registration fee. Participants will be given a University Meal Deal card that will be preloaded with a set dollar amount and can be used like debit cards to purchase meals. The University Meal Deal card is accepted at local restaurants in College Park. Transportation The Washington, D.C. area is serviced by three major airports: Reagan National Airport, Dulles International Airport and BWI. Reagan National Airport is accessible via the metro-rail system, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. All three airports provide shuttle and car rental services for hire. UMD shuttle Buses run from the College Park METRO station to the Stamp Student Union on a regular basis. What to Pack & Washington, DC Weather July in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area is one of the hottest and most humid months of the year. Although classes are in air conditioned buildings, there will be some walking outdoors to dining facilities, etc.
