The MD/DE Master Logger Program is a voluntary program
designed to help loggers meet the ever increasing demands on the logging profession.

The program consists of three parts; a 16-hour core component, current CPR & First Aid certification
and an annual 4-hour continuing education requirement.

The core component's four courses are :

  • OSHA Logging Safety (OSHA Awareness)
  • Sustainable Forestry I, II and III

Logging Safety - Most logging accidents cause permanent damage. Think of your insurance rates, AND your life. More than 90% of all accidents are preventable. Learn how.

Sustainable Forestry- This course is a 3-part program completed in three 4-hour sessions. This is the only Maryland specific course required to become a MD/DE Master Logger.

  • Sustainable Forestry I - BMPs and Aesthetics includes MD Green Card (Erosion & Sediment Control) Certification (required for every logging company operating in Maryland)
  • Sustainable Forestry II - Forest Ecology and Silviculture
  • Sustainable Forestry III - Wildlife and Outreach

You must also show current certification in First Aid and CPR: OSHA requires EVERY person on the job to have current certification cards from these trainings! Contact your local American Red Cross, American Heart Association, fire department, hospital or community college to enquire as to available training options.


Continuing Education Courses are offered on special topics such as: Logger Activism, Advanced OSHA Safety, Endangered Species/Forest Habitat Protection, Business Management, Defensive Driving, and Wetland Ecology. Training notices are sent to all Master Logger as courses become scheduled.
The MD/DE Master Logger Program has been endorsed by the MD/DE Sustainable Forestry Implementation Committee as the training vehicle for the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) in Maryland. The Program is coordinated by the MD/DE SFI-SIC and the Master Logger Steering Committee(MLSC) Committee

The Master Logger Program was developed by the Maryland Eastern Shore RC&D Council in cooperation with the Maryland Forests Association, MD DNR Forest Service, American Pulpwood Association (now the Forest Resources Association, Inc.) and MD Cooperative Extension.
